Normally
I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions, but there have been some things
I want to do with this blog that I haven’t gotten around to doing
yet, so why not set some resolutions for myself as a blogger.
1. Give open studio a face-lift.
1. Give open studio a face-lift.
This
is something that doesn’t have to happen right away, but at some point
between now and 2013 I would like to revamp the look of the blog. I had
a lot of fun putting the overall design together before launching open studio
last March, and I would like to take some time to update the look of it
all. This will probably include a new header, a new sidebar, and a
much-needed revision to the About section (you know, since we no longer live in
St. Louis).
2. Comment on other blogs.

I’m
what the blogging community refers to as a Lurker. I scan through all
of the blogs in my Google Reader, never commenting on any of the posts.
One of the reasons I started open studio
in the first place was out of frustration for the lack of transparency
in design. There is so much amazing architecture and design in the
world, but it seems that only architects and designers are aware of it.
I wanted to create a blog that could appeal to more than just
architects, while simultaneously exposing these non-architects to all types of
design. I wanted to create a place where readers could share their
thoughts and observations on design and living. The problem is that I,
myself, am not contributing to the larger conversation. What good is it
that I talk about modern living and design in my own little corner of
the internet without commenting on what other people are saying on their
blogs? I intend to change this attitude. That is not to say that I
will start commenting senselessly on every post I come across. It is
not in my nature to comment frequently, so I will gather up the courage
to start with a simple comment on blog posts that I feel I can add to
positively and respectfully.
3. Add more DIY projects.

In
architecture school, we spend so much time making things - models,
installation pieces, furniture, etc. - that upon graduating, it’s a nice
change of pace to not be building. However, I have reached that point
where I find myself longing to be making things again. My Pinterest is
filled with ideas, and now I must dedicate a portion of my time to
actually making them. This also includes sketching. I miss sketching.
It’s time to create some Art.
