Kitchens 101

I love the kitchen in this apartment!  It’s not much bigger than our old kitchen, but it’s infinitely better.  The novelty of having a brand new stove and fridge, granite countertops, and sleek cabinetry has yet to wear off.

In our house, Vincent does all the cooking.  My most recent adventure in the kitchen resulted in inedible bacon.  Yes, I destroyed bacon.  I am, what you would call, domestically challenged.  Therefore, I will stick to reviewing what I know: Layout.

While there are a lot of great things about our new kitchen, the layout could have been thought out better.  In a previous post, I showed how I would rearrange our overall apartment floorplan, including removing part of the kitchen wall.  While that was intended primarily for the TV, it would also improve the functionality of our kitchen.  As it stands now, the freezer door cannot open fully without hitting the wall.

I honestly don’t know what they were thinking when they designed it.  The only reason it would be acceptable to have a refrigerator directly next to a wall is if the freezer is on the top or bottom without french doors, which is not really standard anymore.

Fortunately, Vincent and I are able to make do with this situation since we don’t use the freezer as frequently (one of the benefits of only grocery shopping for two).  However, a more irritating problem is the cabinets.  On the other side of the kitchen, the cabinet door swings into the wall.

Since this is an exterior wall, there is not an alternate layout solution.  There is, on the other hand, a common sense solution: the end cabinet door should swing the opposite direction.  So in my future house, I will pay attention to the location of the cabinets and fridge.

  1. There are lots of various kinds of kitchen countertops that you could select from, for example you will discover granite counters, which are one of the more preferred options for several reasons.
